A focus on Living in Estepona

The town of Estepona lies on the western side of the Costa del Sol, midway between Marbella and Gibraltar. For many years it has been a popular destination for family holidays and second homes, yet in recent times Estepona has also become the focus for much of the new development in the greater Marbella area – making it an increasingly popular destination among investors, homebuyers and developers of luxury modern apartments and villas.

Location and beaches

The dramatic Sierra Bermeja mountain range rises up behind the town of Estepona, providing an impressive backdrop and a playground for hikers, bikers, stargazers and lovers of nature in general. It is a great place to take dogs out for a long walk at the weekend, go for a picnic, sample a countryside venta or visit some of the interesting white villages to be found just inland.

Estepona has a popular beachside walkway that runs from the yacht marina west of the town centre, right through to Laguna Village shopping mall in the east. Several of Estepona’s beaches have blue flags awarded for cleanliness and safety. La Rada is a long, sandy beach that is ideal for family fun and also offers a number of water sports, such as kayaking and windsurfing. Playa del Cristo, which is west of the town, is another clean, well-kept beach with a traditional chiringuito beach bar that attracts both families and younger people.

Education options in Estepona

There are three international schools within a short drive from Estepona’s town centre: Mayfair Academy, which takes children up to age 18; International School Estepona, which caters for children from 2-12 and Sotogrande International School, which provides primary and secondary education, plus boarding. In addition there is Colegio San José, a private Spanish-speaking college for both primary and secondary pupils.

Estepona is famous for its large Wednesday market where you can buy everything from baby clothes or sunglasses and shoes to fresh fruit and vegetables. The town has an excellent selection of shops including internationally known brands such as Zara and Mango, plus some wonderful shoe stores and specialist shops. For supermarket shopping it has Mercadona, Lidl, Aldi, Carrefour and Supersol stores plus the usual range of local fishmongers, butchers and bakers.

Estepona Yacht Marina

Estepona’s port is charmingly relaxed and a great favourite with both local residents and visitors. In addition to a total of 447 yacht moorings with a maximum draught of six metres and length of 35 metres, the harbour offers an assortment of restaurants and bars, including excellent Thai and Chinese as well as traditional restaurants serving fresh fish. On Sunday morning, there’s a lovely market in the port, which is the perfect spot for a leisurely weekend stroll and coffee.
